Your city, Your scene
A noisy performance at Its a Grind coffeehouse in Simi Valley.
I wrote this song after dropping my son at a downtown bus-stop. He was hitchhiking across the US. I saw a young lady getting on a bus - headed for I don't know. But anytime someone is getting on a bus at midnight, there is a story behind it... So she makes into this song, my made up back story.
Do It Again
Copyright (c) 2009 – Matthew Moran
30 miles outside of Albuquerque
The old man set his pack down to rest his bones
Years of bad luck and bad decisions
Years of no place to call a home
Looks out towards the West, into the sunset
Said, “I think it might be time to settle down.”
Then he lit another smoke
Laughed at his old joke and
Stuck his thumb back out into the wind
Sayin..
(chorus)
It’s a long road to nowhere
It’s a long time when time is all you have
But if you don’t count all those days
Where you seem to lose your way
You can fool yourself & say
I can do it again
Verse 2
A young girl with her baby and her bruises
Nursing both and her shattered heart
Climbs aboard a greyhound to California
Searching for the sun, the warmth, a start
She don’t look back, she knows that he’s still sleepin’
The beer and the pills they saw to that
And she’s cries for her hope
And those dreams gone up in smoke
And smiles through the tears cuz she’s gonna win
[chorus]
Bridge
Standing in the ocean
Waves swirling around her feet
She looks back at her little boy
Playin’ on the beach
And an old man and his guitar
His song comes floating in the wind
She says, “It’s days like this that let me know… I can do it again.”
I Look out towards the West, into the sunset
Say, “I think it might be time to settle down.”
Then I light another smoke
Laugh at my old joke and
Stick my thumb back out into the wind
